Bio:
Antonio Sorese Linneman is an American painter, born and raised in Ossining, NY. He works primarily in oil painting and mixed medium. His paintings explore the contemporary American landscape, and he currently lives and works in Chicago, IL. He is currently a senior at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, prior to coming to Chicago he studied at PrattMWP Arts Institute in Utica, NY. He has shown both locally here in Chicago and nationally throughout the East Coast. He has been awarded several merit scholarships throughout his College career. He is currently a curator and co-owner of The Yards gallery here in Chicago alongside fellow artists Will Dryden and Yue Ren.
Artist Statement:
My work explores and is directly inspired by the post-2001 American Landscape. Through the creation of large scale oil paintings of collaged media and images, I explore the relationships of our contemporary history and cultural landscape. Within my large scale paintings I use images of figures, historical events, iconography, media, and abstraction. I use oil painting as a medium because it requires time, reflection, and movement in its reproduction of images. Through the reflection and reproduction of images on canvas, I am able to piece together and articulate a larger external cultural landscapes that expands beyond my studio walls. I collage and reproduce these images in order to create visual dialogues and understanding of our contemporary landscapes as it correlates and is impacted by our media, identity, and historical events. I believe it is important for painters to create visual and historical documentation of the time they live as a means for preservation and understanding.
